The Overflow of a Godly Man: Giving From the Heart
As men pursuing God, we often look for practical ways to walk out our faith. We want to lead our families well, serve our communities, and honor Christ with our lives. But one principle sits at the center of spiritual growth, spiritual strength, and spiritual leadership: giving from the heart.
Giving isn’t about pressure. It isn’t about checking a box. And it certainly isn’t about God demanding something from us. Giving is about overflow—what God has poured into us naturally flows out of us.
“The good man, from his [inner] good treasure, brings out good things; and the evil man, from his [inner] evil treasure, brings out evil things.” — Matthew 12:35
God Doesn’t Command Us to Give—He Equips Us to Give
In the Old Testament, tithing—giving a tenth—was mandated. It was part of the Law (Leviticus 27:30). But under the New Covenant, God has given us something far greater than a rule to follow. He’s given us the Holy Spirit, who cultivates in us a spirit of generosity.
“Let each one give [thoughtfully and with purpose] just as he has decided in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver [and delights in the one whose heart is in his gift]. [Prov 22:9]” — 2 Corinthians 9:7 AMP
Through grace, we’re invited to give not out of obligation, but out of love. Not reluctantly, but joyfully. Not because we “have to,” but because we want to. The Spirit transforms giving from a burden into an act of worship.
“For the Law was given through Moses, but grace [the unearned, undeserved favor of God] and truth came through Jesus Christ. [Ex 20:1]” — John 1:17 AMP
The More We Align With the Holy Spirit, the Easier Giving Becomes
When we’re aligned with the Holy Spirit, giving becomes second nature. The fear of lack fades. The grip on what we treasure begins to loosen. We start to see giving not as losing something, but as sowing something.
“But I say, walk habitually in the [Holy] Spirit [seek Him and be responsive to His guidance], and then you will certainly not carry out the desire of the sinful nature [which responds impulsively without regard for God and His precepts].” — Galatians 5:16 AMP
A man who walks with God understands this: every sacrifice becomes a seed, and every seed produces spiritual increase.
“Now [remember] this: he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows generously [that blessings may come to others] will also reap generously [and be blessed].”— 2 Corinthians 9:6 AMP
Time. Money. Prayer. Energy. Encouragement. Skill. Hard work.
Whatever we give—big or small—God sees it, honors it, and breathes blessing on it.
A Man After God’s Heart Lives With Open Hands
Life will present you with many moments where God nudges your heart to give:
• A brother in Christ needs encouragement
• A family is struggling
• A ministry needs support
• A neighbor needs help
• Someone simply needs kindness
Every one of these moments is an opportunity not just to give, but to grow.
“Just as each one of you has received a special gift [a spiritual talent, an ability graciously given by God], employ it in serving one another as [is appropriate for] good stewards of God’s multi-faceted grace [faithfully using the diverse, varied gifts and abilities granted to Christians by God’s unmerited favor].” — 1 Peter 4:10 AMP
When you sacrifice something you covet—time, comfort, routine, or resources—you step into deeper spiritual maturity. You’re telling God:
“Your will is greater than my will. Your kingdom is greater than my comfort”
“Therefore I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies [dedicating all of yourselves, set apart] as a living sacrifice, holy and well- pleasing to God, which is your rational (logical, intelligent) act of worship.” — Romans 12:1 AMP
And God never overlooks that kind of obedience.
You Can’t Outgive God
This is a truth every Christian man needs to settle in his soul:
You will never be able to outgive God.
You give a little—He multiplies.
You give from the heart—He fills the heart.
You sacrifice—He supplies.
You step out in faith—He steps in with blessing.
“Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure—pressed down, shaken together, and running over [with no space left for more]. For with the standard of measurement you use [when you do good to others], it will be measured to you in return.”— Luke 6:38 AMP
“And my God will liberally supply (fill until full) your every need according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:19 AMP
God is, and always has been, in the blessing business.
Men of God, Step Into the Overflow
Live with open hands. Give with an open heart. Walk in step with the Holy Spirit. Let generosity become part of your identity as a follower of Christ. Because when your heart overflows with the goodness of God, giving becomes not just something you do—but something you are.
“In everything I showed you [by example] that by working hard in this way you must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He Himself said, ‘It is more blessed [and brings greater joy] to give than to receive.’ ” — Acts 20:35 AMP
